MEDICAL CODING

            Medical coding is the transformation of healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes.

             Medical coders assign codes to treatments, tests and procedures that are used to submit accurate claims for reimbursement from insurance companies and government programs. This helps to ensure that providers are properly compensated for their services.

There are three types of codes that medical coders use, which include ICD, CPT and HCPCS codes.  

               The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is a globally used diagnostic tool for epidemiology, health management, and clinical purposes. It is developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is used to classify diseases and other health problems recorded on many types of health and vital records including death certificates and health records. The ICD enables health providers to classify and code symptoms and diagnoses, and is designed to promote international comparability in the collection, processing, classification, and presentation of health statistics.

               Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes are a set of medical codes used to describe medical, surgical, and diagnostic services and procedures. They are developed and maintained by the American Medical Association (AMA). CPT codes are used for billing and reimbursement for medical services.

 

                     HCPCS codes are used to identify products, services, and procedures used in the healthcare industry. They are used by insurance companies, Medicare, and Medicaid to determine coverage, payment, and reimbursement for medical services
